No-Limit Texas Hold’em Poker- Who is Phil Ivey?
November 14th, 2009 by Miranda

Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker competitor in the world by most of the top-ranked pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to discover every little thing he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not let the adverse feedback from others kill his dream of becoming one of the strongest poker players in the world.

Phil started competing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his skills at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning few years for Phil were a learning opportunity and winning wasn’t a common outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he destroyed quite a few of the well known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and a continuing love for poker. Phil states that he’s learning every single day and is very humble about his accomplishments. He admits to making errors in each session of poker and always aspires to improve.

Even though Phil has come first in some large tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a regular basis.
