December 23rd, 2020 by Miranda

Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed participating in different card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games while playing his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to play some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were tough as he played many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more rest and focus even more on the game.

The real improvement in his abilities began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly challenge each other. Howard had access into some of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. He used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard headed to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
