January 10th, 2023 by Miranda

Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved playing numerous card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very competitive in these card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he would play extensive hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He believed he could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus more on the game.

The actual advancement in his skills happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often play against each other. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was a great student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. He headed to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
