August 28th, 2023 by Miranda

Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor in the world by many of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His papa taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wished to discover anything he possibly could about poker. Phil would tell his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He didn’t let the adverse comments from other people kill his goal of being one of the greatest poker competitors on the planet.

He began competing intently after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his abilities at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a learning opportunity and winning was not a regular thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he made two final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he destroyed many of the better known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He decided to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his success to hard work and an eternal love for poker. Phil states that he’s picking up skills every single day and is incredibly abashed about his accomplishments. Phil admits to making mistakes in each game of poker and constantly strives to get better.

Even though Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a normal basis.
